By being actively involved in your care, you and your family can help make your care safe and your hospital stay a more positive experience.

Here are some tips on how you can be involved.

Be your own advocate

Tell us what you need:

  • Ask any questions or tell us about your concerns or if something does not seem quite right
  • Alert staff if you think you are about to receive the wrong medication or have the wrong test, or if you think you have been mixed up with another patient
  • Tell a staff member if you are in pain. Ask about your options for pain relief.
  • Ask someone you trust to be with you when having important discussions with staff about your care, to advocate for your interests and to be part of your health care team.

Participate – be part of your health care team

We know that patients enjoy better outcomes if they participate in discussions and making decisions about their condition and treatment. You can:

  • Read all medical forms and make sure you understand them before you sign
  • Understand what medications you take and why. Learn about any possible side effects and let the staff know if you have any bad reactions.
  • Ask about our plan for keeping you safe – how we work to preventing fall and reduce the risk of a pressure injury (bedsore)
  • Make sure you are getting the right treatments and medications
  • Learn about your diagnosis, the medical tests you are having and your treatment plan
  • Ask about other options for treatment or seeking a second opinion.

Observe – following the right procedures

As a patient you can expect us to follow these procedures:

  • Staff identifying themselves – each staff member should introduce themselves to you and discuss with you what they are going to do before they begin. You should be able to easily see their identification badge.
  • Patient identification – each staff member should check who you are before they give you medications or any other treatment. They will check your ID band and ask you your name to make sure we give the right care to the right patient.
  • hand hygiene – remind staff members to clean their hands before they deliver care if you have not seen them do so.
